The Book of Paper

What is the educational value of craft? What do we learn through the act of making? Is 'craft' still relevant in today’s design world? Conceived by designer/sculptor Oliver Helfrich, The Book of… series will explore these themes by celebrating the creative potential and intrinsic qualities of seemingly ‘everyday’ materials such as paper, wood, glass, clay/ceramics and stone.
The first in this new series of publications is The Book of Paper. From tissues and take away coffee cups to milk cartons, paper plays an integral role in our day-to-day lives and yet we often take it for granted. Through a series of rich and complex sculptures The Book of Paper elevates the aesthetic value of this most ubi-quitous of materials.
A collaboration between Helfrich and photographer Antje Peters, The Book of Paper also features a series essays written by artists, architects and scientists, all of whom have unique approaches to paper – from adopting origami to fold NASA telescopes, to creating earthquake-resistant cardboard architecture or using paper as a therapeutic tool.
